If there has been no improvement at all after six to eight weeks of consistent, scheduled training, it's worth consulting a veterinarian to rule out a medical issue such as a urinary tract infection. Genuine lack of any progress is uncommon when a schedule is followed closely, so a stall usually points to either an inconsistency in routine or an underlying health cause.

Within a couple of weeks, many puppies start ringing the bell on their own, though owners should be prepared for a phase where the bell becomes a fun toy rather than a genuine signal - some puppies will ring it repeatedly just to go outside and sniff around. This isn't a failure of the method; it simply means the owner needs to go outside briefly each time the bell rings during this phase, without fanfare, so the puppy learns the bell is functional rather than purely for attention or play.

Young puppies under twelve weeks often need one nighttime bathroom break, while puppies over four months can usually sleep through the night without one. Set an alarm for a consistent time rather than waiting for whining, since this prevents accidents and reinforces the overall schedule.

This is common and usually means the bell has become associated with attention rather than bathroom needs. Respond by taking the puppy out briefly without play or treats, and if nothing happens, return inside calmly so the dog learns the bell isn't a shortcut to fun.

Used well, a crate becomes less of a restriction and more of a predictable home base, the way a child's own bedroom offers comfort rather than punishment. The crate should never be used as a place of punishment itself; a puppy sent to the crate angrily will start associating it with negative feelings rather than safety. Instead, short positive stretches in the crate, paired with a chew toy or a meal, build the association gradually, and the crate becomes a tool the puppy voluntarily retreats to later in life. Once the myths are cleared away, the actual process is far more mechanical and predictable than it first appears. This article walks through the most persistent myths about crate training, bell training, scheduling, and regression, replacing each one with what actually works in practice. Options such as https://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/view_profile.php?userid=1461894 help keep everything running smoothly here.

Most puppies show solid progress within four to six weeks of consistent training, though full reliability can take up to six months depending on breed size and household consistency. Smaller breeds often take slightly longer due to smaller bladders.

Myth: A Setback Means Training Has Failed Few things rattle new owners more than a puppy who seemed fully trained suddenly having accidents again after weeks of success. This is potty training regression in puppies, and it's far more common than the myth suggests, which claims that regression means the earlier training didn't actually work. In reality, regression is usually triggered by something specific: a house move, a new pet or family member, a change in feeding schedule, or even a minor illness like a urinary tract infection that makes control physically harder.

Setting Up a Crate Schedule That Actually Works A workable schedule accounts for the puppy's age, feeding times, and the household's daily rhythm rather than following a generic chart. For a ten-week-old puppy, a realistic plan might include a crate period overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. with one middle-of-the-night bathroom break, followed by short wake-eat-potty-play-crate cycles throughout the day, each lasting roughly ninety minutes to two hours depending on activity level. The key is consistency in the order of events rather than rigid clock-watching, since a puppy that eats at 7:15 one day and 8:00 the next will still follow the same internal pattern as long as the sequence after eating stays the same. For the first few days, physically guide the puppy's nose to touch the bell every time before opening the door, saying a consistent cue word like "outside" as you do it. Praise or offer a small treat the moment the bell rings, then go straight outside so the puppy connects the sound with the reward of fresh air and the chance to relieve itself. Gradually reduce the physical guidance over the following week, waiting a beat to see if the puppy reaches for the bell on its own before you help, until the behavior becomes fully independent.

Clean the area thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to remove scent markers that might attract the puppy back to the same spot, and avoid scolding after the fact since the puppy won't connect the correction to the earlier accident. Simply redirect calmly and reinforce the outdoor routine next time.
